Cobia Time in Port Canaveral Florida

After a windy and slow winter, it's time to get started with a new year of fishing; and the first fish out of the blocks—COBIA. I have blogged about this fish before, but since I find the cobia probably the most exciting (and best eating) fish in the ocean, it doesn’t hurt to talk about them again.

This is the time of the year when they show up in numbers here off Port Canaveral.  What makes it so exciting is that this is almost exclusively a site-fishing experience.  When the sun gets high and the water warms up, the fish come to the surface, either as single fish, in packs, or when it really gets the adrenaline up, swimming along with monster manta rays.

We stalk the fish in areas where they have been congregating and when we spot them, either toss jigs or live bait to them. Watching the cobia turn on the bait and engulf it is a real rush. Catching these thirty to seventy pound fish on spinning gear is one of the greatest fishing experiences any angler can have.

The fish should be here from now through April, so book your trip to get in on the cobia fishing action. Recipes included!
